It was a very enlightening take on the age old dilemma of WTF is wrong with using electric cars? I watched it NOT because it bashed the evil GM car co., but because it really showed how we as Americans Love our muscle cars. Fast and furious corporate americans capitalized on the media, which turned the electric into a WIMP automobile…

The electric car is not a Wimpy motor, ask anyone now a days who own a ford SUV hybrid. They are just as strong and fast in the city at slow speeds and towing campers and trailers. GM and others just wanted to stick with the oil companies and bleed more money in that market in the 90′s.
[ I don't think cold or extreme heat have any affect on the electric motor; I live in Minnesota it's currently 0º outside]

i just finished watching the movie and i thought it was great, and where do these folks get michael moore from… any way it’s just one more piece of information that makes me feel disgusted to call myself an american… do you also know, cars ran on alcohol before the prohibition and the reason to prohibit it, was to make it so there was nothing competing with gasoline? after gasoline became the trademark for automobiles they brought alcohol back. ALCOHOL CAN BE A GAS OR SOLAR PANELS AND ELECTRICITY COULD RUN OUR CARS! something needs to be done and it won’t happen until americans wake up

1. This was NOT a Michael More movie (nor was it strictly about GM.) It was directed by Chris Paine. There is a sort of sequel in the works called Revenge of the Electric Car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Killed_the_Electric_Car%3F (where you can check out the numerous links)

There is a lot of information that has come out since the release of the movie. For example, the batteries that were eventually used in the EV1 were NM-HI, Ovonics and GM had the world wide rights to them. These rights were sold to Texaco that was bought out 6 days later by Chevron. A rumor has the entire design of the EV1 being sold to a “major oil company” The batteries were the object of lawsuits that have effectively made them unavailable for electric vehicles. The batteries were very successful in taking an electric car from Boston to NY on one charge and used for over 150,000 miles in the RAV4ev.

Basically the movie was good as a taste of what is going on. If it made you want to know more it was successful. But no movie is going to supply a lot of substantiated facts. I think it was a good overview of what was happening at the time. You might try getting to a showing of “Fuel” , a more recent movie that discusses the refining of oil, to see more.

America is loosing the “war” for an energy and environmentally sound future. The movie was only a part of this story. Too many people and companies want to do “business as usual” in, what is becomming increasingly apparent as, a rapidly changing world. Other countries are rapidly pulling ahead of us and an even bigger question than “who killed the electric car?” is why we can’t seem to make the technological and popular advances in the fields of building, transportation and energy that we have in other areas like the internet and some electronics.

I don’t always agree with Michel Moore documentaries, but the movie “Who killed the electric car” was good. I can’t remember if it answered the question as to who kill the ‘ev1′.
